TADOBA NATIONAL PARK

Location

Situated in Chandrapur district of Maharashtra state, India and is about 150 kilometres from Nagpur city. It is the oldest and largest national park of Maharashtra which came into being in 1955. The word ‘Tadoba’ is derived from the name of God “Tadoba” or “Taru,” which is praised by local tribal people of this region and “Andhari” is derived from the name of Andhari river that flows in this area. The area of the park is 1727 square kilometres. The Tadoba National Park is divided into three separate forest ranges, i.e. Tadoba north range, Kolsa south range, and Morhurli range, which is sandwiched in between the first two. There are two lakes and one river in the park, which gets filled every monsoon, the ‘Tadoba Lake,’ ‘Kolsa Lake,’ and ‘Tadoba River.’ These lakes and rivers provide vital ingredients needed to sustain the park’s life.

More than 80% of the southern tropical dry deciduous forest of tadoba national park is dominated by teak, bamboo, bija, dhauda, hald salai, semal and tendu. The park is also dotted with patches of lush meadows.Tadoba-Andhari National Park is the largest wildlife reserve in Maharashtra and is home to about 88 tigers (2018 tiger census) and several other mammals. The park is also inhabited by a variety of reptiles including marsh crocodiles and the endangered Indian python. There are also 195 species of birds and 74 species of butterflies ensuring an unmatched wildlife experience.

Where to stay?

I stayed at Sylwan Wood Resort which is at a distance of about 20-30 minutes’ drive from Kolara Core Zone and Alizanja buffer zone. Other nearest zones from this place are Pangdi Core Zone (about one hour drive-45 kms) and Madnapur buffer zone, about 30 minutes’ drive. Apart from this there are numerous resorts and hotels available on the periphery of the park

So far I have been to many national parks in India but Tadoba visit is close to my heart because of amazing landscapes, wildlife photographic experiences and diversity of flora and fauna I came across during the visit and because of this I would like to visit the park at least once a year. Undertook the journey during second week of June’2022 and because of time constraint, was able stay at the park for only two days during which I took four numbers of gypsy safaris. First days was the plan to visit Pangdi core Zone and Kolara Core zone whereas on second day was planned for Alizanja and Madnapur buffer zones. Safari timings are 05:30am-09:30am in morning and 03:00pm-06:30pm in the afternoon in summers. Was able to capture wild dogs, sloth bear, tigers, four horned antelope, leopard, spotted deers, sambars, Gaurs, crocodile and host of birds which included Indian paradise flycatcher, Indian Pitta, honey buzzard, changeable hawk eagle, different types of woodpeckers. Was fortunate enough to have the glimpse of pride of tadoba-The Matkasure, which is a huge tiger and has now entered into the fag end of his life. The climate during the June is very hot in the region and so was at tadoba as well. You need to have good endurance to roam under scorching sun in afternoon safari but the same pays you back in terms of good sighting of wild animals especially the tigers. Had to wait for more than two hours at one place at particular place, Jharni Tiger’s forest hut in Madnapur buffer zone, at a temperature of around 45 degrees but which ultimately paid me amazingly by the sighting of Matkasur and other tiger.
